Residents enjoy Indian summer

Who said it wasn’t a barbecue summer? Not the residents of Webbers Piece in Maiden Newton, that’s for sure.

Tenants at the sheltered housing scheme are enjoying alfresco dining, thanks to the early autumn sunshine and a recently constructed patio area.

Paid for through landlord Magna Housing Association’s Community Initiative Fund (North Area), the patio was built by Quarr Builders – one of a number of local companies who helped in the project.

Residents’ Association chairman, Bob Hilton, said: “We are very grateful to Magna for providing the funds, in particular their representatives Ken Boddycombe and Gary Buckingham who has supported and encouraged the project. Also to Andrew Robinson of Quarr Builders, who laid the new patio and redesigned and installed the new garden area.

“Mr Robinson also gifted a barbecue for residents to cook on.”

Others who donated items or offered their services cut price, included plumbing firm, LA Mowbray, Wrixon Electrics, B&Q, Simon Simmonds Carpentry, plasterer Steve Bowditch, Travis Perkins, Alto Flooring and Maiden Newton Service Station.

“Earlier in the year a new kitchen was supplied and fitted I’d like to say thank you to everyone who helped with both that and the building of the patio area,” added Mr Hilton.

“The kitchen itself was paid for by residents from a set aside fund with other improvements planned being new chairs for the hall, disabled toilets and wheelchair access.”

Magna said it were delighted to support Webbers Piece, which consists of 32 flats and bungalows.

Director David Aldwinckle, who officially opened the new patio at a barbecue for residents and invited guests,  says “we are pleased to have assisted the residents at Webbers Piece with a donation from the Community Initiative Fund.

“It’s also great that so many local firms and services have helped out and supported what is a really fantastic cause.”
