Magna employees, Fern Gatland and Adam Morris, found themselves popping out for more than a sandwich during their recent lunch break

Magna employees, Fern Gatland and Adam Morris, found themselves popping out for more than a sandwich during their recent lunch break.

On their way to buy some lunch, Fern Gatland and Adam Morris heard faint cries for help.  They saw a gentleman, Mr Davis, propped up against a wall outside Hawthorn Flats.  “We ran over to him as it looked a bit odd and we saw he had two large cuts on his head which were starting to bleed quite heavily.” said Fern, facilities assistant at Magna Housing Association.

The quick thinking couple rang for an ambulance – they were told to hold a compress to his head and not to move him.  Fern provided tissues for Mr Davis to hold against the gash above his eyes to stop the blood running into them, while Adam proceeded to comfort him.

Adam Morris, ASB administrator for Magna Housing Association commented, “Mr Davis had two deep cuts on his head with blood everywhere, he was propped against a wall in the wet having slipped over.”   The ambulance arrived within 2 minutes. In the mean time Adam rang Mr Davis’ friend.  The helpful pair then left the paramedics to it.

“Mr Davis kindly came into Magna to thank us, he told us he had lost a pint and a half of blood and had to have stitches,” added Fern.

Mr Davis, who turned 77 in December, added, “I might not be here if it wasn’t for these two.  I really think they saved my life!”

Fern and Adam have worked for Magna since April 09 and August 08, respectively, and have been nominated for Magna’s “The Big Thank You” reward in recognition of their supportive and helpful attitudes.
