Sherborne homes wrap up warm

2/18/2010

Magna residents in Sherborne are benefiting from warmer and cosier homes.

Magna are working with the Dorset Energy Advice Centre (DEAC) to run a pilot project to make the homes of Sherborne more energy efficient by installing cavity wall insulation.

DEAC are currently surveying properties in the Sherborne area to see if they are suitable for the insulation work.

Peter Bywater from DEAC said:

“Having cavity wall insulation makes a real difference to the heat loss in a property, reducing it by up to 25%, making it more comfortable and cheaper to heat.  We only have enough funds for a pilot project at the moment and Magna Housing Association saw this as a great opportunity to gauge the responses from its residents who might benefit from having the energy saving measures installed”.

Roy Price of Magna said:

“We are also working with Scottish & Southern Electricity and are trying to secure more grant funding. This would mean we could improve the energy efficiency of even more homes”

If you live in Sherborne and receive a letter from Magna Housing Association asking you to make an appointment with DEAC please do call them back on the number provided. DEAC will then be able to carry out the survey for you.

In the meantime, all of us can save money by taking the standby challenge.  Just take a moment now to look round your home and see how many mobile phone chargers that are left plugged in with no phone connected. These can cost you £3.00 a year.

Laptops, games consoles, printers, scanners, set top boxes to name a few all have transformers in their power leads. Even though your laptop may be off, is the power lead still connected? Feel it, is it warm? It's using energy for nothing.

TVs, video, DVD players, surround sound cinema systems, all left on standby - all cost money. A family of four saved £23.00 per month off their electricity bill, just by turning everything off standby.

Go on give it a go, what have you got to lose? Actually, nothing.
