Stamping out domestic violence
11/23/2009
Magna is putting its best foot forward to stamp out domestic violence.

The organisation has unveiled an eight-foot black stiletto to demonstrate its commitment to the cause.
The massive shoe is on display in the reception area of its head office at Hollands House in Dorchester and is there to promote National Domestic Violence and Abuse Awareness Week (November 23-27).
Josie Watson, from Magna's anti-social behaviour team, explained: “The shoe is enormous and you can’t help but take a step back when you see it. We wanted something striking to make people think about the effects of domestic abuse and this certainly fits the bill.
“At Magna we have a dedicated team trained to deal with domestic violence and abuse, something that unfortunately goes on in all walks of life.
“It’s something we work hard to eradicate all year round but National Domestic Violence and Abuse Awareness Week is an opportunity for us to really raise the profile.”
Magna works with a number of support organisations, specifically around helping residents who experience domestic violence.
These includes the Domestic Violence officers at Dorset Police and Dorset Women's Outreach Project.
It has also signed up to a new Code of Good Practice that has been developed by housing associations to help tackle the problem.
Miss Watson added: “Domestic violence happens in an intimate or family-type relationship and forms a pattern of threatening and controlling behaviour.
This can include forced marriage and so-called 'honour crimes'. Domestic violence can also take place in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender relationships and can involve other family members, including children.
“We would urge anyone suffering such abuse, or anyone who thinks they know a victim of domestic violence or abuse, to seek help urgently.”
Dorset Women's Outreach Project can be contacted by calling 0800 58 77480 while Magna residents wanting more information or support should call 01305 216030. All calls will be treated with the strictest confidence.
